Phantom Limb Syndrome
A limb amputation is a traumatic event in itself that calls for a great deal of rehab and recovery time. That rehab can be hampered if the patient suffers from what is known as Phantom Limb Syndrome.
Phantom Limb Syndrome is an often-misunderstood condition that affects those who have had a limb amputated, but it also may affect women who have undergone a mastectomy as well. It manifests itself as pain in the limb that is no longer there.
Researchers are still working to determine exactly what causes this puzzling condition, but the common general wisdom is that nerves in the spinal cord and brain “rewire” when they lose signals from the missing limb. As a result, they send pain signals, a normal response to the body ‘sensing’ something is wrong. The typical response when your body senses something has changed.
Neuropathy treatments can be very effective to help relieve the pain, tingling and even burning sensations. At Northern Colorado Neuropathy Clinic, we have the trained and empathetic staff that amputees need to treat, and cope, with Phantom Limb Syndrome and its complications.
